At Churchill, as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations, we are holding an exhibition to celebrate ‘Science and technology at Churchill College, the first fifty years’.
The exhibition will celebrate the achievements of Churchill’s scientists and engineers from the founding Fellows to the latest generation. It will feature a wealth of historical and contemporary scientific objects, models, notebooks, illustrations, and drawings. The exhibition is open from 11 October to 3 December daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Jock Colville Hall, Churchill College and admission is free.
Contributions to the exhibition include the Nobel prizewinner Francis Crick, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA; Antony Hewish, another Nobel Laureate, who was awarded the prize for his work on the development of radio aperture synthesis and its role in the discovery of pulsars; Peter Wadhams, recently named by the Independent as one of the top five environmentalists working in Britain today; and Henning Sirringhaus who, as co-founder of Plastic Logic, is developing a unique process to produce flexible display modules for ‘take anywhere, read anywhere’ electronic reader products.
To accompany the exhibition, a series of free public lectures will take place in Wolfson Hall at Churchill College. All lectures commence at 5 p.m. on the following dates:

The 2010 Lecture, entitled The wellbeing of the world: global patterns of health, wealth, and happiness will be given by Professor Angus Deaton, Dwight D Eisenhower Professor of Economics and International Affairs at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University. It will take place on 9 November, at 6 p.m., in the Auditorium, Fitzwilliam College. The Lecture is open to members of the University and others who are interested.

St John’s College has decided to increase its internal HR capability and an exciting opportunity has arisen for an outstanding individual, with significant experience as a generalist personnel professional, to take on the new post of Personnel Manager. The Personnel Manager will be responsible for providing a high quality human resources service to the College and its staff, across the whole range of human resource disciplines. The post-holder will lead the College’s personnel function and will have a particular focus on the College’s academic and academic-related staff. The Personnel Manager will be supported by a Personnel Officer whose principal focus will be on the College’s assistant staff. The post-holder will be involved with day-to-day HR issues as well as strategic and policy developments.
The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent, will be fully CIPD-qualified and will have substantial experience of working as an HR professional across a broad range of human resource disciplines including in higher education.

The College seeks to appoint an experienced Development Director from 1 January 2011. The successful candidate will lead the College’s fundraising and alumni relations activities. Working closely with the Master, Development Committee, Fellows, and alumni of the College, he/she will build upon the success of the current programmes and will develop and implement a major campaign to strengthen the College’s endowment and secure its academic future.
The successful applicant will most likely have a proven track record in major gift fund-raising, legacy, and annual giving campaigns, will possess excellent powers of communication and persuasion, and will be capable of leading a small team and working with alumni, students, and academic staff. He/she will be confident in his or her ability to work effectively in a collegiate community of the highest academic calibre.
The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, renewable subject to satisfactory performance. The stipend is expected to be between £55,535 and £64,379 a year. Benefits include a final salary pension scheme. It is expected that the successful candidate will be elected a Fellow of the College.
